Congrats, Ricky Gervais! With a whopping 89% of the vote, you’re our readers’ pick to host the 2018 Oscars. More than 2,000 people cast their ballots, but only 11% of fans came out to vote for Ellen DeGeneres in our Oscars host poll. However, many folks did mention on Twitter that they’d love to see Gervais and DeGeneres host the show together — that’s a suggestion we’d be happy to get behind. (For a refresher of former Oscar hosts through the years, click through our photo gallery.)
Of course, Gervais received worldwide acclaim for his hosting stints at the Golden Globes in 2010-2012 and 2016, setting an acerbic tone that felt just right for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s annual gala of drunken acceptance speeches. Here are some of the many fan comments supporting the idea of Gervais as Oscar host:
Luis E. Carlo: “I want to see what Ricky Gervais will do.”
Ceej: “I want to see Ricky because he has done such a great jobs at Golden Globes in the past. Ellen is good, too but she has already hosted the Oscars so bring on Ricky.”
Mhatilda: “Ricky Gervais. Is the guy to do it. RICKY!!!! RICKY!!!! Is the smart choice.”
Connie: “Ricky should do it!! He’s so much funnier and naughtier! Ellen won’t insult Trump & his thugs, but I have a feeling Ricky would take it on!”
DeGeneres is only the second woman after Whoopi Goldberg to host the Oscars solo, in 2007 and 2014. She put a personal spin on the show by going out and interacting with the audience, something this year’s ringleader Jimmy Kimmel emulated in his act. DeGeneres is perhaps best known for her impromptu celebrity selfie in 2014 and delivering pizza to the audience.
Popular performers that came close to making it to this final poll showdown between Gervais and DeGeneres were Kimmel, Tina Fey & Amy Poehler, Kate McKinnon and Hugh Jackman.
