Oscar-winning makeup artist Joel Harlow dishes ‘incredible undertaking’ of ‘Star Trek Beyond’ [WATCH]

“It’s overwhelming,” admits makeup artist Joel Harlow when asked during our recent webcam chat (watch above) about his Oscar nomination for “Star Trek Beyond.” “You know sort of when the announcements are coming out, so I try to distract myself as much as possible.” In fact, Harlow was working on location in Atlanta, GA, when the news broke. “I was running around set, and I didn’t want to check my phone,” he divulges. “Suddenly, texts started coming in, and if it’s one text, you’re not too certain, but once it’s multiple texts, you kind of have a good feeling that maybe you’re one of the nominated.”

The veteran special makeup effects designer won an Oscar for J.J. Abram‘s first installment of the rebooted “Star Trek” franchise in 2009. On that film, “I dealt with two races of aliens: the Vulcans and the Romulans, both very humanoid in comparison to what we built on this film.” In this third installment from Justin Lin, “we ended up with 56 different races of aliens, and that’s an incredible undertaking.” That wasn’t the intention going in, but, “as the script was still being fleshed out, there were opportunities for us to populate,” several backgrounds with various extra-terrestrials, and Harlow jumped at it.

Harlow previously contended for his work on “The Lone Ranger” (2013). He competes this year against “A Man Called Ove” and “Suicide Squad” alongside Richard Alonzo.
