‘Outlander’ star Caitriona Balfe previews Season 3: ‘It’s quite tragic’ for Claire and Jamie

Outlander” leading lady Caitriona Balfe assures fans of the Starz series that her character, the time-traveling Claire Randall, will be reunited with her lover, Jamie Fraser, soon. The third season of the historical drama kicked off on Sept. 10 with an episode, “The Battle Joined,” that saw Claire in 1940s Boston and Jamie back in 1740s Scotland. But as the actress revealed during a recent screening of the premiere, this star-crossed pair will get back together at some point in season 3 of ‘Outlander.”

That won’t be a spoiler for anyone who has read “Voyager,” the third of the eight historical novels (and counting) by Diana Gabaldon, on which the hit series is based. However, cautions Balfe, this moment will be a long time in the making and that “it’s quite tragic this season.” The actress readily admitted “it was interesting to think about how someone leads a compromised life and how they function within that.” And she concedes that bringing those emotions to the screen “was a great challenge.”

On the lighter side, Balfe loved that we get to see Claire both as a wife and mother but also as a woman forging her own identity as a medical student. As for playing this same character in various times, the actress welcomed the chance to try out different looks. Her favorite decade? “Hands down the 1960s: the hair is great, the makeup is great, the clothes are great.”
