“We chose David Berry to play John Grey [because] he had the right combination of very good-looking and a little bit of aristocratic looks, like the son of a wealthy family,” reveals “Outlander” executive producer/writer Toni Graphia in Starz’s new video featurette (watch above). Graphia is joined by fellow “Outlander” bosses Matthew B. Roberts and Ronald D. Moore to discuss Berry’s introduction in “Outlander” Season 3, Episode 3, titled “All Debts Paid.”
“He’s just a really good actor, that’s the one thing,” adds Roberts about the Australian star. “We were watching casting of him and we just kind of felt like he could bring John Grey [to life], who’s a very important character, especially in this season. We had to have somebody that could play against both Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe and stand up to them. And we knew right off the bat. It’s very rare that we all agree on a person right off the bat, and I think David was one of those guys where we just go, yeah that’s the guy.
Lord John Grey will grow to become a much more integral character as this third season, based on Diana Gabaldon‘s “Voyager” novel, progresses. Oscar Kennedy previously played a teenage version of Grey back in Season 2, but Berry has taken over as the adult character now that the show has advanced its timeline.
