Season 1 introduced us to Claire (Balfe), a nurse during WWII who reunites with her husband Frank (Tobias Menzies). They take a second honeymoon to Craig na Dun where she mysteriously travels back in time to the 18th century. While trying to figure out what happened and if she can return to the 1940s, Claire meets Jamie (Heughan) and they soon marry then fall in love. But they’re in constant danger from Captain Black Jack Randall (also Menzies) and Season 1 ends with the two fleeing Scotland for Paris.
Despite its obsessively loyal fan base, the show hasn’t received much love awards-wise. The first season only earned one Emmy nomination for Original Dramatic Score (Bear McCreary, “Sassenach”). But the Golden Globes were kinder, nominating Season 1 for Best TV Drama Series, Best TV Drama Actress (Balfe) and Best TV Supporting Actor (Menzies) in 2015. The Critics’ Choice Awards nominated the show for Most Exciting New Series in 2014. It sadly lost all of these trophies.
