In “The Doldrums,” the ninth episode of season three of the Starz hit drama “Outlander,” Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie (Sam Heughan), leave Scotland, sailing to the West Indies on an urgent quest. But when the superstitious crew looks for someone to blame after a string of bad luck, rescue comes from an unlikely source. The episode was written by Shannon Goss and directed by David Moore.
In our ongoing video series, “Outlander” fan Rob Licuria is joined by Amanda Spears to dish the highs and lows of this chapter of the fantasy romance saga. This season is based on “Voyager,” Diana Gabaldon’s third novel in the series of books (Watch above).
“The Doldrums” continued to explore the relationship between Claire and Jamie, and the differences between the two lovebirds after so many years apart. “It seems like Claire is having a harder time adjusting to this century again. She has been there before, but now that she has come back, she’s more educated, she’s seen more, she’s older, she’s more set in her ways,” Licuria explains. “She’s really struggling with these people that have ridiculous views about things because they don’t know any better. And she’s not as innocent as rose-colored glasses wearing as she was when she was first there and that’s a nice nuance for the Claire character.”
Spears and Licuria were also excited about the change in the beautiful opening credits, which were given a Caribbean twist this episode, as the show moves locations from the highlands of Scotland to the tropics of Jamaica. “We got new credits!” Spears proclaims. “So clearly we’re moving locations, so that’s fun. We knew something special was happening in this episode, and that was nice.”
“It was a nice touch,” Licuria agrees. “I like how they do that, it kind of gives you a taste of what’s to come. I really love it when TV shows do that. It’s like a little nod to the fans, for the ones paying attention.” See the chat in full by clicking on the video above.
