“Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” just had its premiere but there is still a wait before it opens worldwide on May 26. To whet your appetite take a look at the action-packed teaser trailer above. Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) is caught in the crosshairs of the ghost of Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem), who is determined to make the pirate pay for his untimely death. Also back in breeches are Oscar champ Geoffrey Rush (“Shine”) as Captain Barbosa and Orlando Bloom as Will Turner. And, in a surprise, Keira Knightley returns to the franchise after skipping film No. 4 to play Turner’s wife Elizabeth.
In this fifth installment, Sparrow goes in search of the Trident of Poseidon. That buried treasure will make him ruler of the sea, allowing him to banish Salazar once and for all to the great beyond. Also in pursuit of this holy grail is Carina Smyth (Kaya Scodelario), an astronomer who hopes it can help with her understanding of the relationship between the ocean and the moon.
We also see flashbacks to Salazar as he was, a naval officer determined to rid the seas of pirates, including the young Sparrow (Depp in digitally enhanced mode). While the older Sparrow cannot recall their previous stand-off, Salazar is obsessed with it. “Pirates had infected the seas for generation, so I vowed to eliminate them all. Jack Sparrow cursed me. I will have my revenge.”
The trailer tags “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” as the “final adventure.” However, if this return to the well proves profitable, no doubt Disney will stretch out this tale into several more sequels. Depp reaped an Oscar bid when first took flight as Sparrow in the 2003 original that launched this moneyed series.
