“I think we were just privileged to have the opportunity to be apart of a series like this,” divulges composer Jasha Klebe during our recent webcam chat (watch above) about his work on “Planet Earth II.” Hosted and narrated by David Attenborough, this BBC America documentary series airing on Saturday evenings at 9 ET/8 CT showcases the various forms of life across the globe. Klebe and Jacob Shea of Bleeding Fingers collaborated on the score with Oscar-winner Hans Zimmer (“The Lion King”), who wrote the main title theme. “We both knew the importance of the series,” adds Klebe, “especially at a time like this.”
Klebe and Shea hoped to complement the epic images of the series with a more cinematic score as “when they were telling us about the project that the technology had taken such as monumental leap,” Shea explains. “They were able to use drone photography to get these seamless pan shots around animals, up close and personal, in a way that they hadn’t been able to do before. So looking at the footage and just responding to the footage was kind of the guiding light.”
Klebe and Shea both cut their teeth working for Zimmer on some of his most memorable scores, with Shea contributing to “The Dark Knight” (2008), “Sherlock Holmes” (2009), and “Inception” (2010), and Klebe penning additional music for “Man of Steel” (2013), “The Lone Ranger” (2013), and “Rush” (2013), to name a few. Their work on “Planet Earth II” has brought the trio a nomination from the International Film Music Critics Awards (IFMCA) for Best Documentary Score. Will an Emmy be next? The original series won Best Score for composer George Fenton‘s work on the episode “Pole to Pole” in 2007, so it’s certainly possible.
