Before the onslaught of Emmy FYC mailers begins next month, Pop TV got a head start out of the gate by sending its “Schitt’s Creek” box to the membership. The breakout original comedy series follows the washed-up Rose family that moves to the titular town after losing all of their money in a crooked business scheme. Eugene Levy stars as the father Johnny, with Catherine O’Hara as his wife Moira, and Daniel Levy and Annie Murphy as their children David and Alexis. The FYC package stands out from the rest thanks to its creative key-shaped flash drive in honor of the show’s namesake motel (see photos below).
Getting shows into the hands of Emmy voters early can be crucial, as before long there will be piles of FYC packages stacking up. Just last year, for example, Lifetime’s “UnReal” was the first mailer sent to the membership, resulting in nominations for Best Drama Supporting Actress (Constance Zimmer) and Best Drama Writing (Marti Noxon and Sarah Gertrude Shapiro).
The motel key flash drive contains two episodes of “Schitt’s Creek”:
#3.01 “Opening Night” — Written by Daniel Levy and directed by T. W. Peacocke
#3.03 “New Car” — Written by Kevin White and directed by Paul Fox
Pop TV also provides a link where TV academy members can stream all 13 episodes of “Schitt’s Creek” Season 3. Will the early shipment help the show break through at the 2017 Emmys? Many members of the cast have earned nominations and wins in Canada, where the show films and airs on CBC Television. The first season earned 14 Canadian Screen Award bids, taking home nine awards including Best Comedy Series.
