In Gold Derby’s battle of the Beasts, Dan Stevens‘ blockbuster performance in “Beauty and the Beast” proved to be no match for “Once Upon a Time’s” version played by Robert Carlyle. A whopping 77% voted that Carlyle’s shifty Rumplestiltskin on the ABC fantasy series is a much better Beast than Stevens’ brooding monster (23%) that’s currently in theaters. While these two modern-day versions of the Beast have little in common, their love of Belle unites them. For Stevens’ Beast, Belle is played by a singing Emma Watson who’s depicted as a fish-out-of-water innocent. Meanwhile, Carlyle’s Rumple falls in love with a more strong-minded and independent Belle who’s been portrayed for six seasons (and counting) by Emilie de Ravin.
As fans continue debating which Beast is better, the results of our poll are quite striking. “Once Upon a Time” only nabs about four million viewers a week, compared to “Beauty and the Beast’s” record-breaking box office numbers. But while more people have no doubt seen Stevens’ version, Carlyle’s fans came out in droves to support the actor who they see as breathing new life into the decades-old character.
