“Every guest has a story,” says the new trailer for HBO’s upcoming anthology series, “Room 104,” which is unlike the current crop of anthologies that have risen in popularity in recent years. Series like “Feud” and “American Horror Story” focus on a new story every season, while “Room 104” follows a new storyline in each episode, more like Netflix’s “Black Mirror” or the classic “Twilight Zone.” And from the looks of the trailer above, “Twilight Zone” might be an especially apt comparison.
Set in the title motel room, the trippy-looking series changes characters, time periods, and even genres every week, with stories ranging from comic, to dramatic, to horrific. The series is created by filmmaking brothers Mark Duplass and Jay Duplass, both of whom are known for their work in front of as well as behind the camera. They previously created the HBO series “Togetherness,” in which Mark Duplass also starred. The duo also produce the HBO animated series “Animals,” and Jay Duplass can be seen as an actor in the Amazon dramedy “Transparent.”
Jay Duplass stars in one of the 12 episodes of “Room 104” as a guest experiencing marital troubles. The cast also includes noteworthy names like James Van Der Beek, Philip Baker Hall, Mae Whitman, Orlando Jones, Keir Gilchrist, and Duplass’s “Transparent” co-star Amy Landecker, among many others.
Will you be checking in to check it out? The series premieres on Friday, July 28, at 11:30pm.
