‘Saturday Night Live’ blows away Emmy series record for wins with 60 and counting; how many more trophies for ‘SNL’ this Sunday?

As “Saturday Night Live” prepares for its 43rd season, it continues to rack up Emmy wins and extend its record as the program with the most trophies ever. At last weekend’s Creative Arts ceremony, it was victorious four more times, bringing its total to 60 and counting. It’s blowing away the record books, with the next closest series for the all-time marks held by  “Game of Thrones” (which is not eligible in 2017) with 38 and “Frasier” with 37.

SNL” could pick up even more at the Primetime Emmys ceremony this Sunday and keep on stretching out its lead. The program is favored in our Gold Derby odds for Best Variety Sketch Series, Best Comedy Supporting Actor (Alec Baldwin), Best Comedy Supporting Actress (Kate McKinnon), and Best Variety Directing.

Among the performing winners for “SNL” over the years, the list has included Dana Carvey, Dave Chappelle, Chevy Chase, Jimmy Fallon, Tina Fey, Melissa McCarthy, McKinnon, Amy Poehler, Gilda Radner, Justin Timberlake, and Betty White. Creator Lorne Michaels has individually won eight Emmys for producing and writing the show (plus six more for “30 Rock” and non “SNL” variety specials) and was inducted into the TV Academy’s Hall of Fame in 1999.

In addition, the program has an overwhelming lead for the most primetime nominations for a series. It has received 243 compared to 124 for “E.R.” and 117 for “Cheers.”
