“Saturday Night Live” went all in on political satire in its 42nd season, inviting Alec Baldwin to play Donald Trump opposite Kate McKinnon’s Hillary Clinton. Even with the real President Trump attacking the show, it experienced a resurgence in ratings and they haven’t been this popular in 20 years. Among the most viral moments were the various pre-taped packages that have proven to be great showcases for both the cast and/or guest hosts. Politics took center stage in “Hillary Actually,” a spoof of modern-day romance “Love Actually” that involved McKinnon’s Clinton asking an elector to cast her vote for anyone else. Alas, her wishes didn’t come true as the electoral college voted for Trump despite Clinton’s three million popular vote advantage.
Cast member Leslie Jones made the most of the shorts by repeatedly making fun of her privacy invasion from the summer and her new love with fellow star Kyle Mooney. Their running gag popped up several times throughout the season and even resulted in a baby for the loving couple.
Another stand-out moment was a commercial for a fake CBS comedy starring Tom Hanks that looked a lot like “Transparent” and focused on a family of clinically depressed professors. It makes fun of all the TV dramedies currently winning Emmys in the comedy categories.
Overall “SNL” has amassed 50 Emmy Awards, more than any other show on television including 38-time champ “Game of Thrones.” Can Season 42 break their record of five wins from 2014?
