On Monday night, choreographer Luther Brown created a hip-hop routine for “So You Think You Can Dancefrontrunner Lex Ishimoto and his all-star partner Gaby Diaz, and his goal was to “show their personalities even more … I think finally [Lex] is going to be able to show people how he has fun.” And that he did! “It’s been technique-central since the show started for me, so it’s good to kick it back and enjoy it,” said Ishimoto. Hip-hop can be a tricky dance style who dancers who don’t come to it naturally, but it was no sweat for Ishimoto, who received his usual abundant praise from the panel of judges, who gave him a standing ovation. “You took it to a whole other level tonight!” Mary Murphy exclaimed with her typical enthusiasm. “You destroyed every second of that. You energized every little nuance in the entire routine … You are the Iron Man of this competition.”

Nigel Lythgoe told Ishimoto, “You didn’t only make your mom proud tonight, you made me proud. When I first envisaged ‘So You Think You Can Dance,’ I wanted people to respect every single genre of dance, and I wanted dancers to be capable of doing every genre of dance. You’ve proved that that is possible, and that makes me so very happy.” Vanessa Hudgens concluded, “It can be scary when you have a contemporary dancer doing hip-hop because sometimes they can’t sit in the pocket, but you just killed it … It was fire, it was hot.”
