“The story of this is that Lex and Gaby are in love, and they’re celebrating their love through dance,” said “Dancing with the Stars” alum Sasha Farber about the samba he choreographed for “So You Think You Can Dance” frontrunner Lex Ishimoto and his all-star partner Gaby Diaz in Monday night’s Top 6 episode. This was the second ballroom routine for the duo, following their successful tango earlier this season, but the judges didn’t think this was their best work. Judge Mary Murphy, the show’s ballroom expert, said, “Holy foosball, that routine was ricocheting all over the floor — what an incredible routine by Sasha Farber.” However, Murphy added, “We do have some issues with some of the bota fogos — you nailed some, you didn’t nail some others. It was a little bit hoppy. You’re weakest when you get into a frame, you kinda lose your posture.” She did end positively, though, by praising his “rhythmical” and “wonderful” African-style movements.
Nigel Lythgoe commented, “[Ballroom dance] teaches you so much, and it’s amazing that it’s gotten into a lot of dancers’ repertoires. So if you get a chance now, especially as you’re going on tour with ‘So You Think You Can Dance,’ take some ballroom lessons. But other than that it was a great show samba. I loved watching it, a lot of energy to kick the show off.”
Do you agree that Ishimoto and Diaz’s samba left something to be desired? Or do you think it was just right? Watch it above, and vote in our poll at the bottom of this post.
