On Wednesday’ edition of “The Late Show,” Stephen Colbert made merry with Rachel Maddow‘s relentless promotion on Tuesday of her ultimately disappointing scoop on Donald Trump‘s tax returns. After sending out a teaser tweet and launching a countdown clock on her lead-in, “All In with Chris Hayes,” Maddow held forth for almost half an hour before revealing that she had the first two pages of Trump’s 2005 Form 1040. Little was learned from these records, other than that he had taken a lost of $100 million and paid $30 million under the alternative minimum tax.
Colbert couldn’t resist having fun with his friend. He too sent out a teaser tweet: “This just in: Stephen has acquired a special joke. He’s going to share it with the world. Shortly. Keep watching.”
Then he took to the air dressed in a style similar to that of the MSNBC host. Waving a piece of paper, he declared, “I hold in my hand something very significant. It is a joke, a joke that we have confirmed has been heard by Donald Trump.” After a long-winded introduction, he posed the age-old question, “Why did the chicken cross the road?”
Then, just as he was about to reveal the answer, he went off on a tangent. “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” host repeated this routine several times, much as Maddow had done. As he wryly observed, “Whether or not you’re a Trump supporter, it ought to give you pause that after all of this buildup, I still haven’t gotten to the punchline.”
