As Emmyologists go, Ken Tucker (Yahoo) is one of the best. Throughout his many years making predictions at Gold Derby, he’s trounced other experts several times, so now it’s important to pay attention to his early focus on hot new Emmy contenders like “This Is Us,” “Big Little Lies,” “Atlanta” and “The Handmaid’s Tale.” (See Ken’s current predictions here. Note: They’re subject to change and evolve over the next few weeks.)
“I think ‘This Is Us’ has a solid base of support in the academy to win many awards,” he says in our chat. (Video above, audio podcast version below.) ” Any time you’ve got a network drama that attracts a decent amount of critical acclaim and is a huge ratings hit it’s something for voters to really take note of.”
Ken’s picking “This Is Us” to win Best Drama Series (with “The Crown” and “Stranger Things” in the place and show positions at our derby track), plus Best Actor (Sterling K. Brown) and Supporting Actress (Chrissy Metz).
He’s currently got “Atlanta” in second place behind two-time champ “Veep” for Best Comedy Series, but he believes Donald Glover will bag the Best Actor gold.
“I think a comedy like ‘Atlanta’ has a much better chance to become more of a hit than it already is,” he says. “It has a strong critical consensus. It feels like a show that can break out to an even wider audience. It’s a good piece of art that just happens to be about a rapper.”
Ken predicts a win for Elisabeth Moss for Best Drama Actress. “I think ‘Handmaid’s Tale’ – in the sense that it’s a really high-quality production – has this sci-fi theme that suddenly has taken on a great timeliness in our current political atmosphere. Strong feminist message. Amazing performance by Elizabeth Moss. I think it’s really got a chance to break through.”
