“Stranger Things” is known for celebrating the 1980s in terms of its setting and its aesthetic, which draws inspiration from John Carpenter, Stephen King, and Steven Spielberg, among other references. Now Netflix is taking the nostalgia one step further by re-imagining season one of the series as a classic arcade game. Watch the video above for a handy recap of the series — eight-bit style.
Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), the telekinetic girl at the heart of the show’s mystery, gets 100 points for refueling with an Eggo waffle, 500 points for levitating a model of the “Star Wars” Millennium Falcon, and 1000 for flipping a van in hot pursuit. But unfortunately it’s game over for Barb (Shannon Purser) in level four, and she’s got no continues left. However, the kids get a 100,000-point jackpot for delivering a critical hit against the final boss, the demogorgon that has terrorized their families and friends from the Upside Down. That gives them a grand total of 108,985 points, but I wonder how many more points you get for a season-two renewal and 18 Emmy nominations including Best Drama Series. Probably a lot. It’s worth another quarter in the machine to find out.
Season two will premiere on Netflix on October 27, but before then it competes for its first season at the Emmys, where it faces other high-profile freshman shows like “The Handmaid’s Tale” and “Westworld” in top categories. How many do you think it will win?
