Last year, “The Americans” finally broke through in a big way at the Emmys, reaping bids for Best Drama Series as well as for leads Matthew Rhys and Keri Russell who play Soviet spies Phillip and Elizabeth Jennings. And it won Best Drama Guest Actress for the second year running for scene-stealer Margo Martindale as their KGB handler Claudia.
This FX series returns on March 7 and by the looks of the trailer above, season 5 could be the one that wins it the big prizes at the Emmys this fall. There will be 13 episodes this season with a final 10 to come in 2018.
The action picks up soon after the end of season 4, with the couple’s teenage daughter Paige (Holly Taylor) firmly enmeshed in their real lives as Soviet spies in Reagan era America. Still suffering flashbacks to when her mother kill someone in cold blooded fashion, Paige is soon being instructed in the ways of espionage and learning how to defend herself courtesy of Elizabeth’s lethal training.
As always, Philip is the parent who is more concerned about the effects of all of this on Paige, arguing his case, without success, to Elizabeth. And with their daughter now in on the game, how long before family friend (and FBI agent) Stan Beeman (Noah Emmerich) discovers their dirty little secret, especially as Paige is dating his son Matthew?
