“What have you done to me, you vengeful bitches!?” screams Colin Farrell in the eerie new trailer for “The Beguiled,” which Focus Features released on Wednesday, April 19 (watch it above). From writer-director Sofia Coppola, the film also stars Nicole Kidman along with past Coppola collaborators Kirsten Dunst (“The Virgin Suicides,” “Marie Antoinette”) and Elle Fanning (“Somewhere”).
“The Beguiled” is set during the Civil War, when a girls’ school in Virginia run by Martha Farnsworth (Kidman) takes in wounded Union soldier John McBurney (Farrell). But tensions arise quickly. “You are a most unwelcome visitor, and we do not propose to entertain you,” says Martha. However, it appears that the soldier has designs on a young woman at the school, Edwina Dabney (Dunst), and that betrayal and revenge soon follow.
The film opens on June 23, but before that it will compete for the Palme d’Or at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival in May. It’s the second film by Coppola to vie for that prestigious award, following her last period film, “Marie Antoinette” (2006), which starred Dunst as the title queen, who was famously executed during the French Revolution. Coppola is also known for her films “The Bling Ring” and “Lost in Translation,” for which she won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay and became one of only four women ever to contend for Best Director.
