‘The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance’ teaser: Netflix prequel to Jim Henson cult classic shooting this fall [WATCH]

Netflix continues to revive America’s collective childhood. After relaunching “Full House” as “Fuller House” and showing us “A Year in the Life” of the “Gilmore Girls,” the streaming service is reaching back into the pop culture vault and reviving the cult classic 1982 film “The Dark Crystal.” A 10-episode prequel series, titled “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance,” goes into production this fall. Watch the teaser above.

“The Dark Crystal” was a fantasy adventure film directed by Muppet maestros Jim Henson and Frank Oz, who used groundbreaking puppetry and animatronics (BAFTA nominated for Best Visual Effects) to bring to life the story of Jen, a Gelfling on a quest to return a broken shard to a powerful gem. In addition to the Gelflings, the film created two parallel races: the benevolent Mystics and the evil Skeksis. The new series will take place years before the film and be directed by Louis Leterrier, who is best known for “The Transporter” (2002), “The Incredible Hulk” (2008) and “Now You See Me” (2013). It will boast more creations from Jim Henson’s Creature Shop and bring back Brian Froud, who was the conceptual designer for the original film.

Netflix vice president of original content Cindy Holland said in a statement, “’The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance’ will combine the art of puppetry perfected by The Jim Henson Company, with Louis’ vision, powerful storytelling and a mix of cutting-edge digital imagery and visual effects. I can’t wait for families around the world to see how we bring these unique characters to life.”
