This could be an unusually good year for horror/thriller films at the Oscars. “Get Out” was a sleeper hit this past spring with critics and at the box office. The upcoming “mother!” boasts an Oscar nominated director (Darren Aronofsky) and Oscar winning stars (Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem). Now A24 has released an unsettling new trailer for “The Killing of a Sacred Deer,” which recently competed for the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival and won the prize for Best Screenplay. Watch it above, and check out the new poster for the film at the bottom of this post.
“Sacred Deer” director Yorgos Lanthimos is known for his unusual and disturbing films. His last effort, “The Lobster” (2016), was a unique social satire in which single people are turned into animals if they can’t find a mate; Lanthimos and his co-writer Efthymis Filippou earned an Oscar nom for their screenplay. Before that his Greek film “Dogtooth” (2010) contended for Best Foreign Language Film for its story of a bizarre home where teenagers are isolated from the world by their restrictive parents. His latest film tells the story of a surgeon (Colin Farrell) and his relationship with a strange teenager (Barry Keoghan) that goes awry.
The film also stars Oscar winner Nicole Kidman, who is having a great year with other acclaimed roles in film (“The Beguiled”) and TV (“Big Little Lies”), along with Tony and Emmy nominee Bill Camp, Raffey Cassidy, Sunny Suljic, and Alicia Silverstone.
The trailer and poster don’t give away much more than that, but we’re still intrigued, and a little bit scared.
