After playing a happy couple on TV’s “The Office” for several seasons, Steve Carell and Amy Ryan are reuniting for the film “Beautiful Boy,” an intense drama about drug addiction from Amazon Studios and Brad Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment.
Belgian filmmaker Felix van Groeningen (“The Broken Circle Breakdown”), who is also directing, and Oscar nominee Luke Davis (“Lion”) adapted David Sheff’s 2008 bestseller of the same name. The subtitle of the book, ” A Father’s Journey Through His Son’s Addiction,” encapsulates the story which chronicles Nic Sheff‘s addiction to crystal meth and his slow recovery.
Carell is to portray David Sheff while Ryan takes on role of Nic’s mother Vicki, who was estranged from the family because of her own issues. She returns to help her ex-husband and son as they battle his crippling addiction.
Ryan reaped an Oscar nomination for her breakthrough performance in 2007’s “Gone Baby Gone,” Ben Affleck‘s first film as a director. And Carell, who lost all six of his Emmy bids for his work as Michael Scott on “The Office,” earned an Oscar nomination two years for his change-of-pace work in “Foxcatcher,” in which he played murderous multimillionaire John du Pont.
