“This is an epic tale rife with destiny, adventure, blood loss, and good against evil!” declares the title character in a new trailer for “The Tick.” Played by Peter Serafinowicz, this superhero is bulletproof, possesses super-strength, and insists that “murder is just not cool,” so step aside Luke Cage! Watch the trailer above, and check out the whole series when it premieres on Amazon Prime on Friday, August 25.
“The Tick” is created by Ben Edlund from a character he introduced in 1986 in a series of indie comic books. That comic was later adapted into an Emmy nominated animated series that ran from 1994-1997, which earned the show an even more devoted cult following. That led to the character’s first live-action adaptation in 2001 that starred Patrick Warburton and earned critical acclaim and a passionate following despite only lasting nine episodes on the air.
Now “The Tick” is back 16 years later to defend The City against evil. “Destiny’s on the line, Arthur. Accept the charges,” he tells his sidekick (Griffin Newman), a milquetoast who flies with the aid of a moth suit. The pair officially made their debut on August 15, 2016, when Amazon Prime made the pilot episode available to stream. The success of that pilot prompted the streaming service to order another nine episodes to complete the first season.
This absurd superhero comedy actually has an Oscar winning pedigree. Wally Pfister is an executive producer of the series and also a director, and while he only has a few past directing credits he cut his teeth as a cinematographer for Christopher Nolan, earning four Oscar nominations and a win for “Inception” (2010).
Two of Pfister’s other nominations were for Nolan’s Batman films “Batman Begins” (2005) and “The Dark Knight” (2008), so he’s well acquainted with the superhero genre, though “The Tick” has a decidedly lighter touch. After such a dark and brooding hero, as the Tick says, “What the world needs now is us, sweet us.”
