The second of the six battles on the March 21 episode of “The Voice” pitted two of Alicia Keys‘ artists — Chris Blue and RJ Collins — against each other. For their battle song, Keys chose “Adorn.” Singer/songwriter Miguel had a big hit in 2012 with this chart-topping soul song.
Blue dominated the duet while Collins struggled to connect with the lyrics. Stefani left no doubt which artist she preferred, gushing to Blue, “I don’t even know if I was listening to your voice, because I was so mesmerized by your body.” Not surprisingly, Keys picked him. And with no other coach wanting to steal Collins, he left the competition.
On the March 13 blind audition episode, Collins, an 18-year-old Chicagoan, had nailed it with his take on the 2015 Justin Bieber hit “Purpose,” He had Adam Levine and Keys fighting to be his coach and went with Keys as their styles are more similar. By the time Blue appeared on the March 14 blind audition episode, was the only coach still in need of an artist. The Knoxville native, 26, sang the blues with his rendition of “Tracks of My Tears,” the 1965 hit for Smokey Robinson and the Miracles. Even though no other coach was contending for this talent, he is a good fit with Keys.
Over the course of the four Battle episodes, the 12 artists on each team will be split into six pairs and have to sing the same song for their survival. The four coaches — Keys, Levine, Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani — will then have to decide which contender in each battle to take to the Knockout rounds.
