The third of the six battles on the March 20 episode of “The Voice” pitted two of Alicia Keys‘s artists — Missy Robertson and Anatalia Villaranda — against each other. Robertson had earned her spot on the team with her interpretation of the Alessia Cara 2016 hit “Scars to Your Beautiful.” While that song didn’t showcase her voice, Keys and Shelton decided at the last second to turn; in the end, it was Keys who connected with her. Despite only being 16, Villaranda has been singing for years. Her version of the 2010 Bruno Mars hit “Runaway Girl” had all four judges hitting their buttons. They were surprised to discover that this big voice was coming out of such a little girl. After each made an impassioned plea for her vote, she opted to work with her idol, Keys.
For their battle song, Keys chose Janelle Monae‘s 2010 soul track “Tightrope,” which was featured on the third season finale of “90210.” Villaranda soared when singing while Robertson was subdued and did not inspire any of the other three coaches to want her for their teams.
Over the course of the four Battle episodes, the 12 artists on each team will be split into six pairs and have to sing the same song for their survival. The four coaches — Adam Levine, Keys, Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani — will then have to decide which contender in each battle to take to the Knockout rounds.
