One of coach Gwen Stefani‘s singers on Monday is moving on to the next round of “The Voice” while the other was eliminated. The battle between JChosen and Kenny P was a duet on the Stevie Wonder classic “I Was Made to Love Her.” JChosen is one of the frontrunners for Season 12, so it was not a tough call for Gwen to select him as the winner of the first battle round of 2017. Unfortunately that means Kenny P is finished for the year since rival coaches Blake Shelton, Adam Levine and Gwen Stefani did not attempt steals.
Our writer John Benutty ranked this battle as one of the highlights on Monday. He says, “Prior to the battle, Gwen was worried that JChosen was holding something back at the same time that Kenny was giving everything he had to give to the competition. Both men showed a lot of passion in the head-to-head and worked off of one another very well. In their comments, Blake liked Kenny’s edginess and Adam lamented not getting JChosen on his own team. Though she had reservations about him during rehearsals, Gwen was impressed enough with JChosen to keep him on her team, eliminating Kenny in the process.”
The NBC bio for JChosen: “JChosen has always loved music, but his large stature made his main focus basketball. While in college, he was plagued with multiple injuries, which ended his basketball career. He later met a music producer who told him to try an open mic night, and he’s been hooked on music ever since. He gigs throughout Atlanta and makes money as a special needs teacher’s assistant. He recently became a father but finds it difficult to see his son, as he lives three hours from his child’s mother.”
The NBC bio for Kenny P: “Kenny comes from a bluegrass family. His grandfather plays the button box and his father plays the banjo. He has been singing his whole life with cousins and sisters. In 2015, Kenny moved to Nashville from Cleveland to pursue music. He lives in a homemade 294-square-foot house on wheels and plays six nights a week at Rippy’s and various places along the Broadway strip. His wife has sacrificed the most, taking a huge pay cut to move to Nashville.”
