During Night 1 of “The Voice” Season 13 battle rounds, Brooke Simpson and Sophia Bollman of Team Miley Cyrus performed Bob Dylan‘s “You’re a Big Girl Now.” Blake Shelton told Simpson that “you held true to what we expected from you,” Adam Levine said that Bollman reminded him of “a little mini-Shakira,” while Jennifer Hudson praised their “togetherness as girls.” But what did their coach Cyrus think? Watch Brooke Simpson and Sophia Bollman battle it out in “The Voice” video above.
Before she made her big decision, Cyrus explained, “When I push my red button at the blinds, I make a commitment to an artist. So I am both of y’all’s coach, no matter what. Whether it’s studios, touring ideas, clothes — that’s my favorite part — I am here for you, whenever you need me.”
After the other three coaches all said they’d pick Simpson’s experience over Bollman’s fresh style, Cyrus followed suit. “The winner of this battle is Brooke,” Cyrus announced as she welcomed Simpson to her team, thereby eliminating Bollman.
Simpson is 26 years old and currently resides in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Here is her official NBC bio: “Brooke is a full-blooded Native American from the Haliwa-Saponi tribe. She grew up on tribal grounds with 4,000 Native Americans, including most of her family. Every year they have a powwow and celebrate their traditions just like their forefathers. She discovered her love of music at age seven when she started singing with her parents. They are full-time evangelists and would take trips every weekend in their RV to different churches to sing as a family, leading praise and worship. Brooke has been performing for many years and it’s gotten to the point where she has started to look for a plan B, so a lot is riding on this audition.”
Bollman is 18 years old and currently lives in Norco, California. Her official NBC bio states: “A recent high school graduate, Sophia grew up with a single mom who supported her and encouraged her to come to The Voice. At 13, Sophia got involved with the non-profit organization Kids Rock Free and was quickly placed in two different rock cover bands. Her main band, No Surrender, was an eight-piece band made up of kids ages 12-17. They performed about six times a month at local events and had the chance to perform for KISS stars Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley at their restaurant, Rock & Brews, in 2016. Now, she is ready to take the next step toward being a solo artist.”
