Two battle rounds down, and just two to go for Season 13 of “The Voice.” Night 3 on Monday evening is a two-hour spectacular that promises several excellent smackdowns and a few steals as well. Coaches Miley Cyrus, Jennifer Hudson, Adam Levine, and Blake Shelton are pairing off their contestants in epic battles to determine which ones will be moving on to the knockouts that start airing on October 30. Gold Derby is now offering our live blog coverage for each episode, including last week’s first battles on Monday, October 16, Tuesday, October 17, and tonight’s third show below.
These battle rounds and many of the other non-live programs have already been recorded in advance of airing on NBC. Battle round advisors for each of the coaches are Joe Jonas (Team Adam), Rascal Flatts (Team Blake), Billy Ray Cyrus (Team Miley), and Kelly Rowland (Team Jennifer). The NBC blockbuster series continues into knockouts and live shows with an all-star live finale on December 19 to declare the Season 13 championship.
Based on the blind auditions the first few weeks, we have our power rankings for each team. Do you agree with our rankings best to worst for the 12 singers on Team Adam, Team Blake, Team Jennifer, and Team Miley?
Enjoy our fun recap of Monday’s battle round, which starts below with our live blog. Sound off in the comments section below about the reality TV show’s favorite moments. Keep refreshing/reloading this page as we’ll be updating live.
8:00 p.m. – Last week each coach used one of their steals so that leaves a spot on all four teams open for the taking. How many steals will we see tonight and which fallen artists will they go to? I wasn’t happy with all the steals last week so hopefully the coaches get some better taste tonight!
8:02 p.m. – We kick off Night 3 of the battles with Brandon Brown and Jon Mero from Team Adam. Jon was my pick for Adam’s best artist so obviously I’m pulling for him on this one, but Brandon was my #4 so it really could go either way. They’re taking on “I Wish It Would Rain” by The Temptations.
8:06 p.m. – Adam’s pre-performance take on the battle is that Jon can teach Brandon to project more while Brandon can show Jon the softer side of his voice. Based on rehearsals, Jon could tell that Brandon was working really hard so he’s definitely feeling the pressure.
8:10 p.m. – What a way to start the show! Both of them were great. I’d give the edge to Jon here just because the acrobatics are more impressive, but Brandon has such a sweet, smooth voice that I want to swim in. Ugh.
8:13 p.m. – Adam says that Brandon handled the spirit of the song better, but he sees more opportunities to do great things with Jon so he sticks with him. Unfortunately, the other three coaches passed on stealing the excellent Brandon. Jennifer specifically said she already has artists that sound like him so couldn’t find room.
8:18 p.m. – Shifting over to Team Blake for the next pairing–it’s Red Marlow vs. Ryan Scripps. Red is more of a classic country singer while Ryan represents more of what new country sounds like. They’ll be singing “Fishin’ in the Dark” by Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.
8:20 p.m. – Rascal Flatts is all hands on deck in these rehearsal sessions, suggesting that both artists push themselves further than they’re comfortable. From my perspective, Ryan seems much more out of his element and could be in trouble.
8:30 p.m. – In comments, the coaches reiterate what Blake had already pointed out about the guys representing old and new country music. Adam called the battle pretty even, but Blake was the one who had to make a choice and he we went with Red. No steal here either.
8:37 p.m. – Team Miley takes the stage next with Addison Agen and Karli Webster. Both artists performed classic singer-songwriter songs in their blind audition, and this week they’re taking on a slow version of “Girls Just Want to Have Fun.”
8:40 p.m. – Miley is such a great coach, especially for these younger women that she brought to her team. She speaks to them as an equal and provides opportunities for all of them to shine. I think it helps having her dad there because you see how she was mentored and is now able to pass all of those lessons on to new artists.
8:46 p.m. – OMG I am played by Karli’s first verse of the song. She sounds like a young Dolly Parton, but she’s singing Cyndi Lauper. Legendary.
8:49 p.m. – Adam is already prepared to steal one of them because he wanted them both in the blind auditions! All the coaches seem to think that both women performed really well and agree that Miley has a tough decision. Miley’s going with her heart and the winner is Karli.
8:51 p.m. – As soon as Carson opens up for the steal both Adam and Jennifer slam their buttons! Jennifer is offering Addison the chance to stick with girl power while Adam reminds her that he’s been fighting for her since the last round. Addison’s choice is… Adam!
8:54 p.m. – In a montage, Anna Catherine DeHart vs. Kristi Hoopes (Team Blake) battling on “Independence Day” resulted in Anna Catherine winning and Alexandra Joyce vs. Jeremiah Miller (Team Jennifer) taking on “One Call Away” resulted in a Jeremiah win. Between Emily Luther and Gary Carpenter of Team Adam, Emily moves on after their duet of “Send My Love (To Your New Lover).”
9:00 p.m. – Jennifer’s first fully-seen match up is Shi’Ann Jones vs. Stephan Marcellus. If you remember, Stephan is the artist that forgot the words at the beginning of his blind audition, but Jennifer saw enough potential to still add him to her team. Let’s see how the risk pays off in their performance of “Oh! Darling.”
9:06 p.m. – Jennifer considers Stephan the most commercial artist on her team, but Shi’Ann’s youth with regard to how much talent she has might be rare enough to inspire her to give the 15-year old the win instead. Commercial break and then the battle.
9:13 p.m. – Adam points out that the break in Shi’Ann’s voice is something that can’t be taught, but Stephan’s power is so huge that it makes it hard to not want to give him the win. Blake thinks Shi’Ann has the potential to win the show–if Jennifer chooses Stephan it’ll be interesting to see if he follows that up with a steal!
9:20 p.m. – Back from the break and Jennifer doesn’t even give Blake the chance to steal Shi’Ann because she kept her for herself! I really thought Stephan would take that one. Wow. The audience is chanting for a coach to steal him, and as he’s walking off stage Miley asks Adam if she should steal and she hits her button! As of now, he’s the one and only guy on her team!
9:22 p.m. – Adam has paired Anthony Alexander with Michael Kight for his next battle. They’re going to sing “I Feel It Coming” by The Weeknd featuring Daft Punk.
9:25 p.m. – During rehearsals Anthony struggles with his nerves, but gets inspired by how comfortable Michael seems to be. Adam says that they both have a lot to teach each other–Michael can improve on his tone and Anthony can improve on his grasp of rhythm.
9:33 p.m. – In terms of pitch, Blake says Michael was right on, but Anthony had a couple issues that need to be worked out. Miley thinks that Anthony is the better match for Adam as a coach and advises him to go that way with his decision. In the end, Adam chooses Anthony because he sees a clearer picture of where he can go in the future.
9:40 p.m. – Miley gets the final battle of the night–she’s got Janice Freeman vs. Katrina Rose. Katrina was one of my least favorite blind auditions so I’m hoping she can change my mind tonight.
9:42 p.m. – Miley paired them against each other because they both have big voices and a lot of attitude as performers. They’ll be singing “W.O.M.A.N.” by Etta James, which Miley sees as the theme of her “girl power” team this season. Billy Ray hears the soul in both of their voices during rehearsal and thinks they’re channeling Janis Joplin in the best way.
9:52 p.m. – Taking the advice of Miley to create their own individual space in the song, both Katrina and Janice take the stage by storm and make very loud names for themselves in the process. I usually don’t like songs that rely so heavily on ad lib, but these two are killing it.
9:54 p.m. – The judges are all on their feet and Adam takes the stage to bow at their feet!
9:56 p.m. – Both Blake and Jennifer are blown away by both of the women so looks like this is going to be an easy steal for either of them. It’s up to Miley which one will be available though… and she goes with Janice.
9:58 p.m. – Probably for the dramatic effect, Jennifer let’s Katrina start to say her goodbyes before hitting her button to steal her! I thought Blake was going to hit his, too, but maybe he agrees with me that JHud Productions is the right place for her to explore this newfound confidence “outside of the box.”
10:00 p.m. – Join us tomorrow night for the conclusion of the battles round at 8 p.m. for another live blog!
