The fifth of the nine battles on the March 27 episode of “The Voice” pitted two of Blake Shelton‘s artists — Enid Ortiz and Valerie Ponzio — against each other. For their battle song, Shelton chose “Love Triangle.” We didn’t see the full battle between these two on the show (it was posted in full online). Rather, there was just a short snippet of them singing this 2016 country hit for singer/songwriter RaeLynn. Ortiz was deemed the winner of this match-up by Shelton. Poor Ponzio did not entice either Adam Levine or Gwen Stefani to use one of their remaining steals.
Ortiz and Ponzio were both featured in the March 13 blind episode audition. Ortiz tackled an Adele song, which is no small task. However, this 25-year-old from Tampa, FL nailed “All I Ask,” a track from the Grammy-winning “25.” It was surprising that Shelton went for her sound, as he tends to prefer those with a country flavor over pop stylings. Conversely, Ponzio had all four judges turn for her rousing rendition of the 1963 June Carter Cash hit “Ring of Fire.” This 32-year-old from El Paso, TX took this song to another level, with her unique blend of country, jazz and pop sounds.
Over the course of the four Battle episodes, the 12 artists on each team will be split into six pairs and have to sing the same song for their survival. The four coaches — Alicia Keys, Levine, Shelton and Stefani — will then have to decide which contender in each battle to take to the Knockout rounds.
