‘The Voice’ blind audition: Chris Weaver belts out ‘Try a Little Tenderness’ [WATCH]

Monday’s return of “The Voice” for Season 13 began with fireworks right away. All four coaches — Miley Cyrus, Jennifer Hudson, Adam Levine, and Blake Shelton — had a four-chair turn for Chris Weaver at the every beginning of the show as he belted out the Otis Redding tune “Try a Little Tenderness.”

NBC’s Emmy-winning “The Voice” premiered Monday with the first blind auditions of Season 13. The reality TV program continues through battle rounds, knockouts, and live shows with an all-star live finale on December 19.

For the performance (watch above), coaches Adam and Jennifer were the first ones to turn around. Just moments later both Miley and Blake joined the competition to make pitches for Chris to join their teams. For the worship leader (and drag queen), he chose to join Team Jennifer, her first score in her first attempt for the U.S. version of the program (after winning as a coach in the U.K.).

In our ongoing live blog during the show, our contributing writer John Benutty said: “Perfect pair. They could be a force to be reckoned with. Watch out! That’s one for Team JHud.”

According to his NBC bio about the 29-year-old from New York: “Chris is a worship leader by day and a drag queen by night. He grew up singing in the church because his mom was a Pentecostal preacher, but being gay, he never quite felt he could express his true self until he discovered drag. His drag persona is a gorgeous sassy woman named Nedra Belle. He performs weekly at the West End Lounge, hosting and singing live. Two years ago he had the opportunity to sing for Jennifer Hudson at a party for her Broadway show ‘The Color Purple,’ and she threw a shoe at him, which coming from their church background is the ultimate compliment.”
