‘The Voice’ blind audition: Raspy, booming Gaby Borromeo performs ‘Happy’ [WATCH]

She’s got purple hair and a killer voice. That’s Season 12 singer Gaby Borromeo, one of the favorite artists of our writer John Benutty, who analyzes the 11 contenders with his power rankings for Monday’s blind auditions. Borromeo is a 22-year-old New York native who performed the Leona Lewis tune “Happy.” Benutty says: “Though I think Gaby is exactly the kind of female pop artist that coach Gwen Stefani was waiting for, it was only Adam Levine and Blake Shelton that turned for her. Gaby has a raspy texture to her voice that she put to great use in the verses, but built to a booming chorus that sounded great. Both coaches think Gaby can win this season, and Gaby put her faith in Adam to help her get there.”

For a major competitor this season, here is her official NBC bio: “Gaby began singing karaoke at eight years old. After a family party, her relatives encouraged her parents to enroll her in lessons, and with classical training, she started to record demos with a local Seattle producer. She obtained her GED and moved to New York at 15, where she worked with numerous production companies, including a brief stint with John Legend. Gaby has been working at the Boom Boom Room in New York ever since the production company she worked for shut down.”
