Five-time coaching winner Blake Shelton needed to add more great artists to his team, and Monday’s episode of “The Voice” brought him one of the best so far in Season 12. Our writer Denton Davidson discusses the 13 artists from this latest episode with his power rankings for the blind auditions. His top choice is Valerie Ponzio, a 32-year-old Texas native who performed the Johnny Cash legendary song “Ring of Fire” (watch above). He says: “With the only four-chair turn of the night from Adam Levine, Alicia Keys, Gwen Stefani and Shelton, this country artist proved to be the highlight of the evening. Her ability to blend genres within a country performance, along with her unique tone easily makes her one of the season’s brightest standouts. After a heated deliberation between all four coaches, Blake came out victorious in securing this potential winner on his team.”
For one of the best singers for this season, here is her official NBC bio: “Valerie grew up in a border town in Texas, where she was heavily influenced by Mexican music. She loves country music but includes Mexican influences in her style. Her brother, Randy, taught her everything she knew, but he passed away in 2011. In 2007, she graduated from Berklee College of Music and moved to Los Angeles to pursue her dreams. She moved back to El Paso after a year and started the band Val and the Southern Line. She is currently on the road with her boyfriend, who plays bass and sings backup for her.”
