In one of the best matches of Season 12 on “The Voice,” coach Alicia Keys pitted two of her team’s most soulful, energetic singers against each other on Monday’s first knockout round of the year. Chris Blue is one of her favorites and could make a real run at the championship starting in two weeks on the live shows. He performed a Stevie Wonder classic while competitor Quizz Swanigan took on a recent Nick Jonas hit song. Neither artist certainly deserved to go home so soon, and neither did with a wise steal being used by rival coach Gwen Stefani (watch their knockout performances below).
Our writer Denton Davidson ranked this battle as the best match-up on Monday’s episode. He says, “The best knockout of the night paired Quizz, the youngest competitor to ever perform on this show, against Chris, one of the most exciting artists to appear on this series in recent years. To kick things off, Chris absolutely blew the roof off the building with his rendition of ‘Superstition.’ The only thing more impressive than his showmanship is his insane vocal range. Quizz had to follow up that showstopper with ‘Chains,’ showing more poise and charisma than any 13-year old should ever possess. It was clear to everyone that Chris could potentially win this season and Alicia had no choice but declare him the winner. But Gwen wasted no time stealing the teenage phenom for herself and both will now compete in the live playoffs.”

The NBC bio for Chris: “Chris grew up in a family of seven in a tiny house. His mother decided to put the family in a band called the Blue Family, where they sang at local churches. It later became the Blue Brothers and they performed across the Midwest and later at the Bobby Jones Gospel show on BET. After high school, Chris worked various jobs and even attempted to go back to school. For the past six years, he has worked as a worship leader. During this time, he met his fiancée, Stephanie, who is from England. They have been in a long-distance relationship ever since. She’s been battling bone marrow cancer for most of her life and flatlined during surgery recently. It’s hard on Chris, who has been struggling with not being there through the hard times.”
The NBC bio for Quizz: “Quizz has been fighting for his life from the time he was born due to lung disease and a bone disorder. In and out of hospitals, he overcame the illnesses and starting singing in church. From ages five to 10, he posted videos online and was featured on many TV shows. He was even featured in a Michael Jackson stage production that toured the nation. In 2014, he moved to Los Angeles with his family and has had a recurring voiceover gig and also performed opposite Wesley Snipes on NBC’s ‘The Player.’ He has taken some time to focus on school and perfecting his talents by writing and working in the studio. “
