Even though she’s quite young, Aliyah Moulden is proving to be a real powerhouse for Season 12 of “The Voice.” Could she be coach Blake Shelton‘s sixth champion in these first dozen seasons. On Monday’s first round of live playoffs she performed a rousing renditon of “Mercy” (watch above).
How did we rank all six performers for Team Blake and which 3 of his singers survived? Here is our analysis of his team on Monday. And here is what our writer Denton Davidson says about Aliyah: “This teenager comes alive on stage and seems to improve with each performance. Covering British pop star Duffy was a smart song choice and perhaps her best vocal of the season. It’s impossible to deny she’s a firecracker on stage, and apparently it translated to votes from viewers at home. I think Aliyah is on the cusp of putting together a great performance and I look forward to seeing more from her.”
Over the first few weeks of this season, Aliyah has taken on the following tunes: Blind – “Hound Dog”; Battle – “Walking on Sunshine”; Knockout – “Before He Cheats.” Of those three performances, our writer John Benutty offered analysis last week: “The best thing about Aliyah as an artist is her willingness to break the boundaries of genre. The worst thing is that when she thought about taking on a solidly country track she chose something as cliché and overdone as Carrie Underwood’s “Before He Cheats.” That being said, this girl is only 15 years old and there’s nothing that can take away from how impressive it is what she’s accomplished already.”
According to her NBC bio: “Aliyah is being raised solely by her mother since her father passed away from lung cancer when she was only one month old. Music helped Aliyah find herself in high school, and her mother signed her up for vocal lessons. She has opened for Caroline Sunshine, Todrick Hall and Jesse McCartney. This past summer, she sang in the BET Experience at the L.A. Convention Center.”
