Night 1 of the playoffs aired Monday night on “The Voice” Season 13, with gospel singer Davon Fleming performing Jennifer Hudson‘s “I Am Changing” for Team Jennifer. The performance impressed JHud so much that she advanced Fleming to the live shows on NBC’s reality TV program, along with Shi’Ann Jones and Noah Mac. Watch Fleming’s winning performance from “The Voice” playoffs above.
Our writer Denton Davidson live-blogged the episode, and as he noted, “Adam Levine said if someone told him he had to perform that song he would have a heart attack and then run away. Miley Cyrus said he she will see him in the live shows. Blake Shelton wonders why Davon is even talking to them because he should be going to get in his limo. It seems like he might be a sure bet to advance!”
Back in his blind audition, Fleming performed “Me & Mr Jones” and had all four coaches turn their chairs around: Hudson, Levine, Cyrus and Shelton. The next time we saw Fleming in the battle rounds, he and Maharasyi sang “I’m Your Baby Tonight” and Fleming was declared the winner by his coach Hudson. In the knockouts Fleming was paired up against Eric Lyn, with Fleming proving victorious thanks to his rendition of “I Can Only Imagine.”
Fleming is 25 years old and currently resides in Baltimore, Maryland. Here’s the official NBC bio: “Davon grew up in a rough neighborhood, experienced a lot of poverty and witnessed hustling on the streets, but he was never caught on the wrong side of the law. Instead, he was known as the singer in his neighborhood. Davon knew he wanted to sing at three years old after watching his mother perform in the church choir. Being a singer was always his mom’s dream before she had kids, but she had to give up that dream in order to support her family. Currently, Davon works as a worship leader and assists with the musical arrangements for the church choir performances.”
