‘The Voice’ playoffs: Team Miley Cyrus trims to final 3 performers advancing to live shows [UPDATING LIVE]

Wednesday night is all about Team Miley Cyrus on “The Voice.” The pop star is competing as a coach for the second straight autumn season and must make the difficult selections of trimming her team from six artists to just three. Those performers will advance to the first live show on Monday, November 20. Rival coaches Adam Levine, Jennifer Hudson, and Blake Shelton will be watching closely to see which of Miley’s artists will move forward on the way to possibly winning the Season 13 championship.

We’ve been live blogging every episode of this season, including all the knockout rounds on Monday, October 30, Monday, November 6 , and Tuesday, November 7 plus this Monday’s first playoffs and Tuesday’s second playoffs. What will happen on this final episode of playoffs? Which three artists will be in the Top 12? Our analysis is found below in the latest recap live blog.

9:00 p.m. – It’s the last episode before the live shows and it’s all Team Miley, the group of artists I’ve considered, all season long, the team to beat. I’m so nervous for my faves! First up is Brooke Simpson,  an artist Adam thinks is one of the strongest in the competition and who has gotten better with each new stage of the competition. She chose her own song this week–“It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World” by James Brown.

9:02 p.m. – Whew she’s bringing the drama this time! Brooke looks great with straightened hair, a t-shirt dress and working the entire stage with the kind of theatrics and vocal acrobatics we’d expect from JHud herself! Not only does she sound great, but Brooke is completely owning the song and showing that she will be a compelling artist to watch during the live shows.

9:05 p.m. – In his critique, Adam compares the energy and fierceness of Brooke’s performance to that of JHud’s and Christina Aguilera‘s–that’s very high praise. Miley, Blake and Jennifer all back him up, declaring her performance flawless and expert quality.

9:12 p.m. – For her comeback artist, Miley brings back Karli Webster who was eliminated in the Knockouts. For this performance she’s got “Coat of Many Colors” by Dolly Parton, a song full of story and enough vibrato to help showcase what comes natural for Karli.

9:14 p.m. – As perfect of a song as it is for Karli, she starts her performance off on shaky ground, suffering from nervousness that doesn’t even out until she makes it to the chorus. At that point her voice opens up a little more and she settles into the groove of the song a little better, but overall it isn’t a strong showing for Karli.

9:16 p.m. – The coaches disagree with me a little bit–Adam even says that if he was Karli’s coach that he would keep her based on that performance. Blake and Miley focus on how perfectly she fits into the niche of vintage country music and that sets her apart from the other artists.

9:21 p.m. – Miley’s third artist, Adam Pearce, is one of her steals from Team Adam. I think the two of them are an awesome pairing. He’ll be signing Nazareth‘s “Love Hurts,” another big rock song that Miley thinks will offer him a chance to show some vulnerability that they haven’t seen yet.

9:23 p.m. – I think this performance is really nice! It’s definitely a more subdued approach compared to what we’ve seen from Adam during his time on Team Adam, but it’s giving us a chance to hear what Adam’s voice has to offer. He can hit some pretty high notes with never sacrificing the quality of the vocal, but I must admit that I miss what he can bring to more energetic songs.

9:25 p.m. – The coaches are impressed by his confidence and how high he can take his voice. Jennifer applauds Miley on choosing the perfect song for Adam and Miley passes that compliments on to Adam for getting as sentimental as she asked him to.

9:27 p.m.Ashland Craft is up next with “When I Think About Cheatin'” by Gretchen Wilson. For Blake, Ashland is the artist that got away from him, and it seems like he’s threatened by the possibility of Miley having one of the strongest country artists in the competition.

9:28 p.m. – In the rehearsal package we learned that Ashland suffers from stage fright anxiety, and to be honest I gotta give kudos to Ashland because when she hits the stage you really don’t see it at all. While I don’t think the song choice is all that exciting, Ashland is nailing the vocal with a deep, rich delivery that soars in a really subtle way.

9:31 p.m. – Adam calls her performance “world class” and Blake laments that Ashland isn’t on his team, adding that country music needs an artist like Ashland.

9:36 p.m. – Up next is Moriah Formica, one of mine and Denton Davidson’s favorites to win! We’ve been calling the competition hers since really early on! She’ll be taking on Beth Hart‘s “World Without You” this week.

9:38 p.m. – There was a little debate during rehearsals as to whether Moriah would play her guitar for this performance and it looks like she decided to bring it! I love that Moriah comes out here totally killing it like the rock goddess Adam called her earlier in the season. She’s like no other artist in the competition and shows incredible maturity for a 16-year old. This performance in particular was much of the same of what we’ve already seen from her, but there’s no denying that she’s a little star ready to make it in the big time. So cool.

9:41 p.m. – Jennifer calls Moriah a star, but says that she lost her way a little at the hook of the song. That being said, both she and Blake tell Miley that there is no way she can possibly let her go.

9:46 p.m. – Closing it out for Team Miley is Janice Freeman with “Fall for You” by Leela James, a song that Janice can connect with on a personal level and will show the softer side of her as an artist.

9:48 p.m. – After a handful of big performances from Janice, the scaling back of this one, with Janice standing still behind a mic stand, is exactly what she needed to show a new side of herself. You can tell that she’s passionate about and connects to the lyric. What an absolutely beautiful performance.

9:51 p.m. – Jennifer says the performance was powerful and moving and as Janice tears up on stage, Miley points out that she made it obvious how personal the song was for her and commends her for being a woman that young girls can look up to.

9:56 p.m. – Now it’s time for Miley to cut her team from six to three (ugh, I have no idea how she she could possibly cut any of them!). Going with her heart, her first two picks are Brooke and Janice! The remaining four all thank Miley for instilling in them a new sense of confidence and humility that they didn’t have before being a member of her team. With that, her final artist to advance to the Top 12 is Ashland! Wow. So Moriah is gone? I’m crying out of shock.

9:59 p.m. – Miley says that she picked Brooke because she has good instincts, Janice she thinks can be a fan favorite and Ashland is the artist that can help Miley win with a country artist. We’ll see if they live up to their potential when they perform next week in the first live shows of the season!
