Battle rounds kick off with a bang for Monday’s episode of “The Voice.” Coaches Blake Shelton, Jennifer Hudson, Adam Levine, and Miley Cyrus must now make critical decisions about which of their team members will move on to knockouts and which ones will be eliminated. Each coach will also have two exciting steals they can use anytime they want during the battles.
These battle rounds and many of the other non-live programs have already been recorded in advance of airing on NBC. Battle round advisors for each of the coaches are Joe Jonas (Team Adam), Rascal Flatts (Team Blake), Billy Ray Cyrus (Team Miley), and Kelly Rowland (Team Jennifer). The NBC blockbuster series continues into knockouts and live shows with an all-star live finale on December 19 to declare the Season 13 championship.
Based on the blind auditions the past three weeks, we have our power rankings for each team. Do you agree with our rankings best to worst for the 12 singers on Team Adam, Team Blake, Team Jennifer, and Team Miley?
Our fun recap of Monday’s battle round starts below with our live blog. Sound off in the comments section about the reality TV show’s favorite moments. Keep refreshing/reloading this page as we’ll be updating live.
8:00 p.m. – Which advisors are you most excited to see over the course of the battles? I’m a huge Kelly Rowland fan so I can’t wait to see her give Jennifer’s team advice!
8:04 p.m. – OMG Kelly and Jennifer talking about all the awards they’ve won. Kelly wants an Oscar? Yes! For her first battle, Jennifer has paired Lucas Holliday against Meagan McNeal. Meagan is a huge fan of Kelly and Kelly is a huge fan of Lucas (she’s seen his YouTube videos).
8:07 p.m. – Jennifer chose for them to duet Bobby Brown‘s “My Prerogative” for its edginess and as something unexpected for each of them. During final rehearsal, Jennifer is worried that while they’re pushing one another they’re also tripping each other up by paying too much attention to what the other one is doing.
8:11 p.m. – A lot of attitude coming from both of them in that performance! They both worked the stage from side to side and had big notes to stand out from the other. I think Lucas was probably more surprising with the sass he gave, but Meagan gave a more complete and authentic performance so I hope she stays at JHud Productions!
8:15 p.m. – Jennifer’s decision came down to which artist was more unique and she chose Lucas. Unfortunately, none of the other three coaches used one of their steals on the fantastic Meagan.
8:20 p.m. – It’s really cute that Miley brought her dad on as her advisor. Their first pairing is Shilo Gold vs. Moriah Formica (my personal frontrunner to win!). Can’t wait to see how this one turns out–they’ll be singing the Lenny Kravitz tune “American Woman.”
8:26 p.m. – Billy Ray is impressed by their lack of nerves and the way they attack the song. During final rehearsals, Moriah made the decision to pick up the guitar for the performance which intimidated Shilo (because she wouldn’t be playing an instrument), but it made her step it up and be more aggressive with her voice to match it. We’ll see their performance after the commercial break.
8:35 p.m. – Whew Shilo just blew me away with that performance. Her vocal delivery was so dynamic and nuanced and she completely killed the stage stomping across it with such confidence. Moriah held her own though and managed to be animated even from behind the guitar. This is a really tough call and I’m fully expecting a steal.
8:37 p.m. – After Miley admitted to being nervous around Moriah because she’s a “rock goddess,” it was clear that she’d keep her for her team. But I can’t believe that Blake didn’t snatch Shilo up–she’s perfect for his team!
8:41 p.m. – Blake’s first battle pairing is Noah Mac vs. Keisha Renee. He paired them together because he sees them as the most powerful singers on his team and they’ll be taking on the Elvis version of “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry.”
8:46 p.m. – In rehearsals, Rascal Flatts challenged Noah to bring bigger notes to his performance in order to match what Keisha was bringing to the table. Blake says that the person that delivers the song with the most feeling is who will win the battle.
8:54 p.m. – Noah seemed nervous, especially at the start of the performance, but eventually got comfortable with the song and sounded fine. Keisha was more on top of the song throughout and would be my choice.
8:56 p.m. – Blake agreed that both artists sang with all that they could give, but he believes Keisha can fly with her voice so he chose her as the battle winner. As Noah was walking away, literally one step from elimination, Jennifer slammed her button and stole him for his team! She says he’s special and has a pop star quality that she wants to help shape.
9:03 p.m. – Jennifer is back with her second pair–it’s Chris Weaver vs. Kathrina Feigh. After this battle, Jennifer will have solidified three spots on her team.
9:05 p.m. – Jennifer sees Chris and Kathrina as her most bold singers and wants to see which one gives the more powerful performance of “Dangerous Woman” by Ariana Grande. Odd choice to make a male artist sing, but I think if anyone can sell it, Chris can.
9:08 p.m. – At final rehearsal, Kelly let them know that they were getting too big with the song and that it wasn’t working. So the struggle for them is knowing how to pull back from the amount of power they have so that the song isn’t destroyed.
9:15 p.m. – Hmm. My impression is that this was a really bad song to choose as a duet for two artists. It started off really shaky on both their parts and it seems like they ignored Kelly’s advice about not overpowering the song. The judges seem to love it (of course they do), but this was way off for me. I wouldn’t choose either of them, LOL!
9:17 p.m. – While she thinks Kathrina held her own against the “freight train” of Chris’ voice, Jennifer went with Chris. Blake was happy to steal Kathrina for his own team–he liked that she gave it all that she had and he thinks she can win.
9:24 p.m. – Another Miley battle. Why haven’t we seen Adam’s team yet? Oh well. This one is Sophia Bollman vs. Brooke Simpson. Miley gave them Bob Dylan’s “You’re a Big Girl Now” to see where they can go creatively by finding big moments in a song they wouldn’t expect to.
9:32 p.m. – I loved this duet! Keep them both! Sophia started it out so beautifully, but when Brooke came in to meet her and then start her own solo she had me immediately hooked. This is going to be a tough one.
9:37 p.m. – In their comments, all the judges applauded Sophia for stepping up to the plate against Brooke who they think is a more refined singer and had set the bar during the blind auditions. Facing a tough choice, Miley agreed with the other three and decided to keep Brooke.
9:43 p.m. – Time for the first Adam battle with (swoon) Joe Jonas supporting him! We got Adam Pearce vs. Whitney Fenimore for this one. I ranked these artists as the second and third best artists on Team Adam so this is bound to be a great duet of the Stevie Nicks and Tom Petty song “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around.”
9:47 p.m. – Sounds like Adam paired these two together thinking Adam would be the clear winner, but after rehearsals Whitney has impressed him and leveled the playing field. Joe is blown away by both and said they’re ready to go on a world tour and he’d pay to see it.
9:52 p.m. – In their individual parts, both of them sounded terrific, but when they were harmonizing I wasn’t as in love with it as I probably should have been. They’re both pretty solid performers though.
9:56 p.m. – Adam says that both artists are 100% equal in his eyes and has fallen in love with them, but stuck with Adam this time. That meant Whitney was up for grabs from the other judges and both Blake and Miley hit their steal buttons for her!
9:58 p.m. – Miley argues that she hit her button for her in the blinds and loved her then and loves her now. Blake pulls the Oklahoma card. Adam puts in a good word for Miley and thinks that she could give Whitney the chance to go down a different road than she expected to. Whitney chooses Miley! Whew what a steal. Miley’s already strong team just got stronger. Game over?
