When the five artists of Team Blake take the stage during “The Voice” live playoffs on April 17 and April 18, it will be to determine which three artists will compete for the chance to become coach Blake Shelton’s sixth champion. Of the five artists, one is a male soul singer, two are female pop-country teenagers and two are traditional country female vocalists. Next week all five will perform with three advancing to the Top 12 — two on the strength of audience vote and one by the virtue of coach’s choice. Which member of Team Adam’s top five could become the winner and defeat the singers from coaches Gwen Stefani, Adam Levine and Alicia Keys?
Below are my power rankings of the remaining Team Blake artists with the top three serving as my best guess as the ones to move on to the Top 12. Disagree? Let me know in the comments!
Audition – “Take Me to the River”
Battle – “In the Midnight Hour”
Knockout – “These Arms of Mine”
There are two things about TSoul that make it obvious Blake will ensure he makes it into the Top 12 — he’s the only male artist on the team and the only performer outside Blake’s own comfort zone of country music. That being said, TSoul is so good that he’d make it through on any of the four teams. The passion and dedication that exude from TSoul when he’s on stage is intoxicating and is the type of thing that will inspire the public to get up and vote for him.
2. Casi Joy
Audition – “Blue”
Battle – “How Blue”
Knockout – “My Church”
Casi is the kind of traditional country singer that Blake loves to promote on the show and she’s barely strayed from that path through three rounds of competition. For that reason alone I think she has a leg up on the other country girls on the team. Her strength as a competitor on the show is beefed up by her full and energetic voice that makes her exciting to watch and could make her a dark horse favorite amongst the voting audience once the live shows begin.
3. Aaliyah Rose
Audition – “Rise Up”
Battle – “Treat You Better”
Knockout – “Like I’m Gonna Lose You”
As one of two teenagers on Team Blake, I’m pretty certain that Aaliyah has a 50/50 shot of advancing to the Top 12. What I mean is that if it comes down to who Blake will save from elimination that if neither Aaliyah nor Aliyah has made it through on the audience vote then he’s going to choose one of them. Of the two, Aaliyah is stronger and I think Blake will agree. Aaliyah’s depth and range exceed that which should be possible out of a 14-year old and I really think she is on the cusp of finding the right song that will give her a breakout moment on the show.
4. Lauren Duski
Blind – “You Were Meant for Me”
Battle – “Better Man”
Knockout – “When You Say Nothing at All”
I thought after two small performances in both the blinds and battle round that Lauren would feel inspired to do something bigger for her knockout, but instead she stayed right in her comfort zone. Lauren has a great voice and is definitely pleasant to listen to, but if I’m being honest she’s just not that exciting. There are moments in her “Better Man” battle though that show a lot of promise and I hope she’s able to bring them to the Top 12 if Blake decides to save her from elimination instead of one of the younger artists.
5. Aliyah Moulden
Blind – “Hound Dog”
Battle – “Walking on Sunshine”
Knockout – “Before He Cheats”
The best thing about Aliyah as an artist is her willingness to break the boundaries of genre. The worst thing is that when she thought about taking on a solidly country track she chose something as cliché and overdone as Carrie Underwood’s “Before He Cheats.” That being said, this girl is only 15 years old and there’s nothing that can take away from how impressive it is what she’s accomplished already.
