Vanessa Ferguson has always done well on Season 12 of “The Voice,” but this week she absolutely nailed it with “A Song for You” for Team Alicia Keys. Performing the Donny Hathaway version of the classic tune on Monday’s Top 12 episode with guest advisor Shania Twain, she really might be the one to beat for this season of the long-running NBC reality show (watch her performance above). Will Alicia be able to take down five-time champ Blake Shelton, three-time winner Adam Levine, and rival coach Gwen Stefani in a few weeks on the finale?
In his rankings for Monday’s program, our writer John Benutty says the following about Vanessa: “Am I a little biased because ‘A Song for You’ is one of my favorite songs of all time? Probably. Is it just a coincidence that they saved Vanessa’s performance to close out the show? I don’t think so. Even as late as last week I was sleeping on Vanessa and did not see her as a legit contender for the win, but wow was I wrong. Not only did Vanessa look so gorgeous in that all white suit, but she also looked comfortable on stage, sounded in control of her vocal and was visibly moved by the song.”
According to her NBC bio: “Vanessa grew up singing with her family. Raised by her grandmother, she enrolled in piano lessons at age five and competed in her first competition in fifth grade. She moved in with her mother at age 13 and began taking songwriting seriously. After being diagnosed with endometriosis, she was hospitalized monthly and poured her heart into music. In 2011, she lived in Beijing, performing six nights a week at the LAN Club, and later toured the world on the Holland America cruise line for five months with the B.B. King’s Blues Club All-Star Band. For the past 11 years, Vanessa has made money strictly from gigging and touring.”
