‘The Voice’ Top 8: Chris Blue performs ‘Take Me to the King’ for Team Alicia Keys [WATCH]

Chris Blue was the last artist chosen way back in the Season 12 blind auditions, and he might yet be the final artist standing on stage in “The Voice” finale. For this week’s Top 8 episode on Monday, he performed the Tamela Mann soulful song “Take Me to the King (watch his performance on the video above). His coach Alicia Keys is trying to win the reality-competition program before exiting to make room for new coaches. Will Alicia be able to defeat five-time champ Blake Shelton, three-time winner Adam Levine, and rival coach Gwen Stefani for next week’s championship?

In his rankings for Monday’s program, our writer Denton Davidson says the following about Chris: “Paying tribute to his church that holds viewing parties for him each week, Chris went deep into his gospel roots for this powerful song about faith and overcoming personal struggles. He stayed in his lower register through the first half of the song, holding his composure until he finally couldn’t hold it in anymore and began losing all bodily control like we’ve become use to seeing from him.  While it wasn’t the most perfect vocal he’s given this season, it was perhaps the most genuine and emotional. The audience in the studio reacted with the longest, most energized ovation of the night.”

According to his NBC bio: “Chris grew up in a family of seven in a tiny house. His mother decided to put the family in a band called the Blue Family, where they sang at local churches. It later became the Blue Brothers and they performed across the Midwest and later at the Bobby Jones Gospel show on BET. After high school, Chris worked various jobs and even attempted to go back to school. For the past six years, he has worked as a worship leader. During this time, he met his fiancée, Stephanie, who is from England. They have been in a long-distance relationship ever since. She’s been battling bone marrow cancer for most of her life and flatlined during surgery recently. It’s hard on Chris, who has been struggling with not being there through the hard times.”
