During “The Walking Dead’s” eye-popping Season 7 premiere, a heart-broken Maggie (Lauren Cohan) watched in horror as Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) killed her husband Glenn (Steven Yeun). Maggie then went to the Hilltop to get treatment for her pregnancy pains, and she’s only been seen sporadically since. While Maggie off dealing with her pregnancy, the other characters are preparing for war, searching for weapons and scavenging for food. Do you think Maggie is being wasted in Season 7? In last week’s carnival-themed episode, titled “Say Yes,” fellow survivors Sasha (Sonequa Martin-Green) and Rosita (Christian Serratos) concocted a plan to avenge Abraham’s (Michael Cudlitz) death by going after Negan. But Maggie wasn’t involved in that decision. Why do Sasha and Rosita get to avenge their man’s death, while Maggie remains in a state of inaction at the Hilltop?
As Maggie continues to tend to her pregnancy and visit Glenn’s grave, it’s important to remember that Negan and his Saviors believe her to be dead. Negan even saw her fake grave site at Alexandria earlier this season, which annoyed him as he’d planned on asking her to serve as one of his wives. So, if Maggie were to leave the safety of the Hilltop community, she would instantly become a target.
Maggie has so far only popped up in four of the season’s dozen episodes: “The Day Will Come When You Won’t Be” (Episode 1), “Go Getters” (Episode 5), “Hearts Still Beating” (Episode 8) and “Rock in the Road” (Episode 9). And she’s also nowhere to be seen in the preview trailer for next week’s 13th episode, titled “Bury Me Here.”
While it’s true that “The Walking Dead” Season 7 is more scattered than usual, with even leading man Rick (Andrew Lincoln) disappearing for episodes at a time, four is still quite a low number for Maggie. Many fans have long considered Maggie to be the series’ strongest female character, ever since she joined up with the group back in Season 2. Do you think Maggie is being wasted this year?
