Vision of Heaven – The episode uses a flashback framing device as Sasha (Sonequa Martin-Green) is being driven to Alexandria. She fondly remembers a conversation with Abraham (Michael Cudlitz) right before the group tried to deliver Maggie (Lauren Cohan) to Hilltop last season. Sasha tells him of a dream where he died and asks him to sit out the mission. Abraham reminds her that should they die, “It’s always for someone else” and “Maggie is carrying the future.” Back in the present day viewers realize she took the poison pill at the start of the journey and these are her dying thoughts.

Traitors – Rick (Andrew Lincoln) seems to have concocted the perfect plan, but is undermined at every step. When The Saviors roll up to Alexandria, Eugene (Josh McDermitt) is at the front of the group, revealing that Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) knows about the ambush and asking for peaceful entry. As if Eugene’s “I’m Negan” line wasn’t hard enough to swallow, when Rick gives the order to blow up The Saviors with dynamite, Rosita (Christian Serratos) presses the detonator to no effect. Jadis (Pollyanna McIntosh) and her junkyard gang suddenly turn their guns on the Alexandrians. Turns out they made a better deal with Negan.

Sasha’s Last Act – When Negan opens the casket to inform his prisoner of the new deal, the now zombified Sasha emerges and tackles Negan to the ground. A fellow Savior throws her off of his leader, but undead Sasha starts eating him instead. Carl (Chandler Riggs) takes the opportunity to open fire on the junkyard gang, and the rest of Alexandria follows suit. An enormous gun battle takes place. Jadis, gun still drawn on Rick, refuses his pleas to make a new deal together and shoots him in the side.

Lucille, Round 2 – Jadis brings Rick to a clearing where Negan has Carl surrounded on his knees. By this point, the Saviors and junkyard gang have overwhelmed Rick’s people. Negan informs Rick that he is going to punish him by killing Carl with Lucille before taking both Rick’s hands. Rick looks down a street with slaughtered Alexandrians and sees a woman shriek and fall to her death from the sniper tower. Believing the woman to be Michonne (Danai Gurira), Rick fills with rage and tells Negan that he is going to kill him no matter what. Negan raises his barbed wire bat over Carl’s head ready to strike…

Team Family – Fortunately Negan doesn’t get the chance to swing Lucille, because Shiva the tiger lunges at the man next to him from off screen. The Kingdom and Hilltop, lead by Ezekiel (Khary Payton) and Maggie respectively, have arrived in Alexandria to fight. Carol (Melissa McBride) and Morgan (Lennie James) spring into action taking out dozens of Saviors, while Maggie has clearly done a fantastic job training her new community for battle. Negan realizes that he is overpowered orders his people to retreat. When the dust settles, Rick, Maggie and Ezekiel stand together uniting their people as one army for the war to come.
