“The First Day of the Rest of Your Life” is the title for this Sunday’s Season 7 finale of “The Walking Dead.” But one zombie-killer will live their last day, at least according to Gold Derby readers. Earlier this week, we asked fans who they thought would die in the Season 7 finale, and they spoke loud and clear as Sasha (Sonequa Martin-Green) received an overwhelming 70% of votes in our poll.
Six apocalypse survivors were deemed potential casualties of war, from friendly series mainstays to new antagonists, but Sasha topped them all. Sasha was introduced way back in Season 3, during the prison storyline. She is currently the last surviving member of Tyreese’s (Chad Coleman) group, having watched her brother die back in Season 5. Should she meet her demise in this week’s climactic episode, viewers will say goodbye to one of the series’ longest surviving cast members.
The last we saw of Sasha, she was a prisoner of Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), the murderous leader of The Saviors. There is plenty of evidence to make poll respondents think she isn’t long for the world. Negan is not one to let a prisoner go. And Sasha has an active desire to kill him, even if it means dying in the process. Thanks to Eugene (Josh McDermitt) she even has a convenient way out — a poison pill he slipped under her cell door.
Speaking of Eugene, the cowardly scientist came in a distant second in our poll with 12% of votes cast. Eugene has turned his back on his friends in Alexandria for the safety and power that comes with serving Negan. It’s possible he will perform some sacrificial act to save Sasha or another Alexandrian. Surely many fans would want to see karma come back to bite him for his traitorous actions.
The other candidates garnered less than 10% of the vote each. So Gregory (Xander Berkeley), Rosita (Christian Serratos), Tara (Alanna Masterson), and Jadis (Pollyanna McIntosh) might feel relatively safe. But with Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and Negan marching to war, each episode could be the last for any of these characters.
