The premiere episode of “The White Princess,” titled “In Bed With The Enemy,” has been submitted as Starz’s paid entry on the TV academy’s FYC website, Gold Derby has learned exclusively. While the Emmy site is updated frequently, as of this writing “The White Princess” is one of only a handful of Best Limited Series contenders with episodes available for voters to watch on their laptops, tablets and phones. This episode may not necessarily be Starz’s official Emmy submission following the nominations, but the premium network feels confident enough to present it to voters to begin the awards conversation.
“The White Princess” is the sequel to Starz’s “The White Queen” (2014), which earned four Emmy nominations: Best Miniseries, Best Music Composition, Best Costumes and Best Hairstyling. Both series are based on the popular Philippa Gregory book series, with “The White Princess” continuing the story as Princess Elizabeth (Jodie Comer), the daughter of the Dowager Queen Elizabeth, is forced to marry King Henry VII (Jacob Collins-Levy), the son of Margaret Beaufort. Comer will be submitted on the Emmy ballot for Best Movie/Limited Series Actress, while the following five performers will be entered in the supporting races: Collins-Levy, Vincent Regan, Essie Davis, Michelle Fairley and Joanne Whalley.
“The White Princess” scored a 71 rating on Metacritic, with many critics singling out Fairley’s fierce mother with claws. Gwen Ihnat (A.V. Club) declares, “Michelle Fairley, previously terrifying as a maternal villain in ’24: Live Another Day,’ is downright chilling as the cruel and calculating Margaret, who cares for little else other than the rise of the Tudors; any feelings or sympathy or compassion just get in her way, so she denies them completely.” And Sonia Saraiya (Variety) praises, “Michelle Fairley plays Henry’s mother, Margaret Beaufort, with icy, God-fearing, goth-queen stature — she might as well be Maleficent, with her rotating black headdresses.”
