“This is Us” was an unexpected breakout hit when it premiered last September 20. Now it’s celebrating its first season finale tonight, March 14, at 9:00pm. As with most episodes of this tearjerking family drama, you should probably grab your tissues in preparation because viewers can expect to finally learn how patriarch Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) died. But what moments of the show have made the actors themselves break down and cry? They recently made their tearful confessions to our sister site Variety.
Ventimiglia admits to being “kind of a softie” who has spent plenty of time crying during the show. “There are so many,” he said. “When William says to Randall the chemo’s not working, that hurt. The end of episode 15, when Kevin walks in on Randall having his breakdown as an adult. Kate at the camp in episode 13, when she’s remembering her father’s funeral … We should probably count the moments when I don’t cry.”
The moments that brought Sterling K. Brown to tears are no surprise. “Episode 16 when we lose William. I can’t even,” he revealed. “I shot an intense episode in episode 15 [the breakdown] and went straight from shooting that episode to William’s passing away. From one day to the next, I felt like my heart was just going to break.”
