As flamboyant struggling actor Titus Adromedon, Tituss Burgess has emerged as the breakout star of Netflix’s “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.” If the two-time Emmy nominee wants to win this year, he will have to choose the perfect episode to submit to judges, should he earn a third consecutive bid. Burgess’s constant hysterical scene-stealing makes it difficult to narrow down to a single submission, so here are the three episodes from “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” Season 3 that could leave voters with the best impression.
Episode 2: ‘Kimmy’s Roommate Lemonades!’ — After witnessing his boyfriend Mikey (Mike Carlsen) bringing home another man, Titus looks for revenge. Taking a cue from Beyonce, he dives into his own version of the singer’s visual album “Lemonade.” Dressed in Queen Bey’s signature yellow dress, he struts down the street to “Hold Up,” baseball bat in hand. The bit comes back several times in the episode, including a brilliant send-up of Beyonce’s poetry delivery. It’s a perfect showcase for Burgess’ physical comedy and signature self indulgence. There have been plenty of “Lemonade” spoofs, but this is the only one that can still make an impact months later.
Episode 6: ‘Kimmy is a Feminist’ — When Jacqueline (Jane Krakowski) is in danger of sleeping with her brother-in-law Duke (Josh Charles), it’s Titus to the rescue. At first Titus pretends to be Flouncy, Jacqueline’s gay best friend in distress. But when the ruse is discovered, Titus covers by pretending to be straight former football player Cork Rockingham who wants to sleep with Jacqueline. What ensues is a “bro-off” between the two men as they compete to win Jacqueline’s affection. This leads to a wrestling match between the two, with Titus purposefully losing the battle. Burgess has played straight on the series before, but this episode shows his comedic versatility and his chemistry with Charles proves he can hold his own with any performer.
Episode 8: ‘Kimmy Does a Puzzle!’ — “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” is at its best when it embraces its own absurdity. Titus’ deranged cruise ship saga is among the series’ most ridiculous so far. During a storm, he reveals to the group that he ate singer Dionne Warwick (Maya Rudolph) during his extended gig on a cruise ship. He tells a tale of he and Dionne, stranded on a lifeboat after an accident that sank the ship. After enduring the Grammy winner’s taunts and insults, a starving Titus has a mental break and starts eating the snarky diva. It turns out this was all a hallucination, but the true story about how he poisoned Ms. Warwick with bacteria-laden hot tub water (so he could take over as the lead of the musical “Mahogany”) is just as funny.
