Tituss Burgess (‘Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’) wows and woos Emmy voters with laughs and music at Hollywood event

Tituss Burgess is pulling out all the stops to win his first Emmy Award. He wowed and wooed Emmy Awards voters Saturday night with laughs and music at the Sayers Club in Los Angeles. Yvette Nicole Brown, star of “Community” and “The Odd Couple,” moderated the Hollywood event that was packed with fans of his show “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.”

Burgess is nominated for the third straight year for playing aspiring actor Titus Andromedon on the Netflix comedy created by Tina Fey and Robert Carlock. While on stage at the “For Your Consideration” party, he discussed his Broadway beginnings, his first TV role on “30 Rock” (and arriving late for the audition), and his love for music throughout his life and especially on “Kimmy Schmidt” starring Ellie Kemper.

The room was decorated with velvet fuchsia walls and fur-covered couches, both excellent touches to honor Burgess and his character. After the Q&A session, he performed two songs on the piano before signing autographs and taking selfies with the audience. The first tune was “All I Need,” one that he wrote for an upcoming Broadway musical based on the film “The Preacher’s Wife.” The second song was the classic “One More for the Road.”

For his Emmy race this year, Burgess has entered the episode “Kimmy’s Roommate Lemonades” in which his character can’t wait to see his boyfriend Mikey (Mike Carlsen) after returning from work on a cruise ship but sees him with another man. What follows is a series of music video parodies of the mega-popular “Lemonade” by Beyonce featuring Burgess. In the end, it’s a touching moment when Titus breaks up with Mikey to let him try and find happiness.

Watch our recent interview below with Burgess where he discusses that episode as well as the third season of the program. He also chats about his Emmy competition for 2017 and his first ever SAG Award nomination earlier this year.
