“Top Chef” is well under way in Colorado for its 15th season and after winning last week’s second Elimination Challenge, Denver native Carrie Baird is feeling the hometown love. This week she joined the 12 other contestants to reinterpret the Denver omelette in the season’s first Sudden Death Quickfire Challenge. Afterward, the contestants were divided into teams to conceptualize and cook a food truck menu fit for college students. By the end of the episode, two chefs were asked to “pack their knives and go,” but who were they?
Below, check out our “Top Chef” recap of Season 15, Episode 3, titled “Keep on Truckin” to find out what happened Thursday night. Then be sure to sound off in the comments section about your favorite chefs, which dishes from the episode looked the tastiest and who you think can go the distance to win the title of “Top Chef.”
For the Quickfire Challenge, chef, restaurant owner and Top Chef Master Lachlan Patterson joined host Padma Lakshmi to judge the contestants’ deconstruction of the classic breakfast dish, the Denver omelette. But for the first time this season, it was a Sudden Death Quickfire, meaning the bottom three chefs would compete again in a sudden death cook-off with one being eliminated on the spot. Carrie was back on top with one of Lachlan’s favorite quickfire dishes of the day, joined by Brother Luck and Tu David Phu for the top three. In the end, Brother’s smoked duck egg was declared the winning dish and earned him immunity in the main challenge.
On the bottom and competing in the sudden death challenge was Tanya Holland, Laura Cole and Rogelio Garcia. After failing to impress Lachlan with their omelettes, the three were asked to reverse course and instead of deconstructing, prove that they could make the perfect French omelette in 15 minutes. Unfortunately, Laura mismanaged her time and plated a runny omelette that collapsed and was hard for the judges to eat. For that reason she was sent home early.
For the Elimination Challenge, Top Chef season 5 winner Hosea Rosenberg was on hand to introduce a food truck challenge. The 12 chefs were asked to compete in four teams of three to create a restaurant concept out of a food truck with three cohesive menu items that would appeal to college students. Knives were drawn to determine the teams, leading to: Yellow team Fatima Ali, Joe Sasto and Tyler Anderson doing “Hangover Cure;” Black team Carrie, Tanya and Joseph Flamm with “Down the Chin;” Green team Brother, Bruce Kalman and Rogelio with “Foodgasm;” Blue team Adrienne Cheatham, Chris Scott, and Tu with “Blazin’ Sammies.”
Despite broken whipped cream guns, blown-out electric equipment and an unusable convection oven, the teams managed to complete their menus in time for the arrival of the student diners. Based off of ticket sales, Down the Chin received the most support from the college students and earned safety from elimination. But Hangover Cure’s smoked tomato soup, sticky chicken wings and dessert waffles was the most popular truck among the judges and earned them top honors. While this marked Fatima’s third straight time being named among the best at the Elimination Challenge, it was Joe’s chicken wings that the judges loved most and he was named the solo winner.
The elote salad, pork and gouda sandwich and a dessert fry bread from Foodgasm combined to make the judges’ least favorite truck, putting the three men in danger of elimination. Because he earned elimination during the Quickfire Challenge, Brother was deemed safe. In a bottom two between Bruce and Rogelio, ultimately Rogelio’s ill-conceived elote salad really missed the mark and so the judges eliminated him from the competition.
