Gold Derby can exclusively reveal that Ty Burrell is entering the “Modern Family” episode “Grab It” as his Emmy submission for Best Comedy Supporting Actor. This installment of the ABC program aired November 9 and was the 6th episode of season 8. In this segment, Phil Dunphy (Burrell) wants to become a member of the favorite place in the world of his father-in-law Jay (Ed O’Neill). He convinces Jay to reluctantly sponsor him for the country club where his son Luke (Nolan Gould) is working. Jay wants his buddies to dislike Phil, but he is a surprise hit sensation.
Will Burrell be able to make a comeback as a winner at the Emmys? He is taking on last year’s champ Louie Anderson (“Baskets”), two-time winners Alec Baldwin (“Saturday Night Live”) and Tony Hale (“Veep”), and returning nominees Tituss Burgess (“Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt”) and Matt Walsh (“Veep”).
Burrell is the only “Modern Family” cast member to compete all eight seasons of the show, and he won the trophy twice in 2011 and 2014. He is also nominated as Best Short Form Actor this year for “Boondoggle.” He has an individual SAG Awards win as Best TV Comedy Actor (2014) and four victories for Best TV Comedy Ensemble (2011, 2012, 2013, 2014).
